real estate investingDoes this sound like you?

You’ve been in business for a while, and you’ve hired a few people to help out over time.  They might be employees or possibly they are virtual assistants. The work is getting done however you have to admit that things just aren’t turning out the way you planned.

You don’t feel like you are “wowing people” any more with your product or service.

  • Today is the day when you’re forced to ask yourself some hard questions.
  • What happened to my grand vision for my business?
  • Why does my company blend in with all the others?
  • Where is the greatness I envisioned when I started this business?
  • Maybe your business has reached a plateau. Or when it comes to innovation you have to honestly say that there is nothing going on in that department either.  You feel like your business has the appeal of stale bread.

That’s the bad news.

But once you’ve said it out loud here’s the good news; you can fix this problem. There is just one thing you have to change to make this happen.

You have to stop fishing in the same pond if you want different results.

Stop Hiring Yourself

Haven’t most of us been guilty of this?

When it comes time to hire someone to help us out in our business, we are often attracted to people that are just like us.  We hit if off right away that person. Quite often they have similar skills or experience.  We have a lot to talk about. The likeability factor is high but probably not for the right reasons.

If you want a different result in your business, you have to quit fishing in the same pond.  Stop looking for people like you for your business and aim for diversity.  Diversity will bring new ideas and new ways of seeing things.  Diversity is the cousin of innovation.

You know the old saying, “If you keep doing what you’re doing, you will get what you’ve already got”.  It’s time to change up the status quo. In other words, find a new pond.

What Does Diversity Have to Do With Innovation?

The short answer is everything.   John Maxwell says that, “Building a team that is too like-minded is the same as filling a golf bag with only 9 irons.  We limit ourselves and that puts us at a disadvantage”.  That is a profound statement.

I found this same analogy to be true with mastermind groups.  The best mastermind groups don’t include people with exactly the same skills, experience and perspectives.   After all, how would that situation help YOU to grow?  How would the other members in this mastermind group benefit from this mix of people?  It wouldn’t.

This is the same principle that should be used in your business.  You need diversity to grow your business beyond what you envision it to be, and yes you will be outside of your comfort zone.  It’s hard at times to put our own preconceived notions aside about how things “should be done”.  It’s even harder trusting people and letting them run with their ideas. In most cases letting them do things their own way will not only help your business to excel it will ultimately set you free.

I believe the key to succeeding at this is to look at your team-members as partners in your business.  If you have the right people in those jobs and they are clear on your objectives and the results they are expected to deliver, letting them create their own way of doing the job will help make them feel more like a partner than an employee. They will be invested in the business’s success.

The next time you need to hire someone, hire a hustler and look for diversity.

4 Ways Diversity will Change the Course of Your Business

Experience: People with different experience will help fill in the gaps where you are lacking experience.   No one knows everything.  Make it a point to look for people with different skills and experience when hiring someone for your business and concentrate on doing what you are great at.

Perspective: These folks will have a different perspective when it comes to solving your problems.  Sometimes” we can’t see the forest for the trees” as they saying goes.  A new set of eyes is often exactly what is needed to solve a problem or create a different result.

Preconceived Notions: They won’t come to your business with the “baggage” you have. If this business has been your baby for a long time, you are probably carrying around a lot of preconceived notions when it comes to challenges you’ve experienced.  Those preconceived notions are bound to affect your outlook when a new set of problems crop of.

Self-limiting Beliefs: Past experiences often weigh us down so much we are reluctant to go out on a limb and try new things. They hold us back. We are our own worst enemy at times.  If you are open to hearing new ideas, you will almost certainly get unstuck and find new ways of innovation with the help of a diverse group of people working in your business.

It’s Never Too Late to Innovate

My advice today is to take a leap of faith the next time you hire someone and choose someone that will add diversity to your business.  Invite new thoughts and new ways of doing things into your workplace and interject some new “mojo” into your business.
