You Are A Badass

You Are A Badass

I have a book review for you today.  The book is called “You Are A Badass” by Jen Sincero.  I picked up the book first because of the title.  Who can resist a great title, right? And, who doesn't want to be a badass?

I actually read this book when I was on vacation some time ago, and I loved it.

Now I have a warning for you; some folks will say this book is a little too “woo-woo” for them. The book bills itself as a self-help book, but I think it’s really more of a self-confidence builder. These are things most of us already know but need to be reminded of from time to time.

“You Are a Badass” is about getting clear about what makes you happy, what makes you feel most alive, then creating that reality instead of pretending you can’t have it or what’s even worse, just settling for the life you find yourself in.

This book challenges you to go from “wanting it” to “deciding” you are going to change so you can have it (whatever “it” is).

Let’s Dive In

This book is divided into 5 main parts that contain 27 bite-sized chapters.  This is a funny book with an occasional “swear word” thrown in, but I have to tell you it’s mostly just plain good advice.

Part 1. How You Got that Way

Part 1 is all about how you ended up with self-limiting beliefs and how to get rid of them.  Most of us inherited our parent’s beliefs without ever consciously choosing them.  Consequently, we limit ourselves tremendously not only in our personal lives but in our careers. If you don’t get anything else out of the book except this, it’s worth the price.

Part 2. How to Embrace Your Inner Badass

This chapter is about acceptance.  Acceptance of who you are (you’re OK just the way you are) and about how you take the next step in your journey without worrying about what other people think.

Isn’t that liberating?  It’s also about trusting your intuition. Instead of trying to figure out what the next “perfect” move is, just do something already, as Jen says it.

This chapter also shows you how to get clear on who you are and what your calling is.

Part 3. How to Tap into the Motherlode

Once again, you have to love great titles.

In part 3, Jen talks a lot about meditation, visualization, and controlling your thoughts.  Our thoughts create our reality, so we all need to get rid of negative thoughts and negative people in our lives. Instead, you want people in your life that act on their ideas and who see limitless possibility.

In Part 3 of “You Are a Badass,” the other thing she talks about is finding your groove.

She challenges us to remember a time when we were doing something, and we were in “the groove,”; a time when we lost all track of time.  She wants us to be able to recreate that feeling. Jen also reminds us to always live in the moment.

Part 4. How to Get Over Your Own BS Already

This is a great section.  We tend to get hung up in the stories we have told ourselves or the ones we have learned from our parents. But, most of all, we need to get rid of those stories that are holding us back.

They are stories like:

  • I always mess up
  • There is never have enough money
  • Earning money is hard
  • I wish…
  • Your belief that “I can’t….”
  • I suck at…whatever it is…
  • One day…

You get the idea.

This is a great book that will help you reclaim your inner badass. Part 4 is also about facing our fears and doing “that thing” anyway. So go for it even if you screw it up, as she says.

Part 5. How to Kick Some Ass

In this part of the book, Jen has some tips for getting rid of overwhelm and curing procrastination.  She also talks about getting some help.

One of the chapters is called “The Almighty Decision.”

  • You have to decide you want it bad, whatever that is for you
  • You have to get good at your “thing,” and this takes time
  • You have to be willing to fall flat on your face

You have to commit to eliminating the negotiation process.  An example of that will be if you decide to start an exercise program. You can’t negotiate yourself out of exercising when you wake up with a headache that first morning.

I think it was Wayne Dyer that said, “To decide is to cut off any other possibility”.

Final Thoughts – You Are A Badass

Jen says in the book that birthing your dreams is a lot like giving birth.  It’s going to be hard, but it’s so worth it.

Creating the dream in your mind is the easy part. After that, the rest is full of hard work, panic, sometimes a lot of pain, but in the end, a miracle appears.

Let me know what you think of the book.
