Anyone that has been an entrepreneur for any length of time knows how important it is in any business to “put yourself out there” every chance you get. It’s important to build your brand and be known as a trusted expert in your field. In most small businesses that brand is made up almost entirely of “you”. Getting leads for your business is your number one job!

Some people are just masters at networking. I have a friend that is like that. After making the initial contact, she always takes the initiative to nurture those relationships which is something that a lot of other folks fail to do. I have been guilty of this myself.

Other people take a more subtle route such as writing articles, joining in on forum conversations and joining online groups of like minded individuals. This is a great way to make some contacts and get noticed in the process. In a best case scenario, we would be doing all of these things to build our business.

Recently I got a lead for my buyer’s list from an unexpected source; Bigger Pockets. For anyone not familiar with this incredible site BiggerPockets.com, it is a site designed specifically for real estate investors. It is a place where they can network, learn from each other and share information. Periodically I write articles for this site. I also send links back to posts from my blog that I think the members might enjoy. You can even list houses that you have for sale here.

A while back, I got an email from a rehabber and his partner in my area that had read an article I posted on Bigger Pockets. He asked me about my business and whether I had any houses to sell at that time. As luck would have it, I did. To make a long story short they bought that house and did a top notch rehab on it. They were great to work with, and I’m sure we will work together in the future.

My purpose for being involved in this site was purely selfish on my part. I wanted to take advantage of everything they have to offer and be able to learn from other real estate investors. Getting some great guys for my buyers list was just icing on the cake.
