mentoring

There are a lot of ways to become known as an expert in your field. Time and experience certainly helps. There's no doubt about that. But there are also things that you can do that will set you apart from the other folks in your business.

What can you do while helping others at the same time?

That’s easy. Start by mentoring other real estate investors that are just starting out. Think back to when you began. Can you remember just how confusing this “real estate stuff” was? I know I was like other newbie real estate investors; I had so many questions. I really didn’t know where to begin.

I was a regular at my REIA meetings, and I networked with other people at the meetings that had much more experience than I did. But I always felt like I was imposing on these folks, and I’m sure that’s how a lot of other real estate investors feel when they are just starting out.

Be generous with your time and your knowledge.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

    • If you see newbie real estate investors at your local REIA meeting, introduce yourself and invite them to sit with you. You can usually spot someone who’s there for the first time. It makes it a lot easier to come back a second time if you were made to feel welcome on your first visit.
    • Participate in online real estate forums. Jump right in and answer questions. No matter what your level of knowledge, there is always someone that knows a lot less than you do.
    • Share your knowledge by posting articles on sites like E-zine.
    • If you have a blog or interactive site post informative articles especially geared toward those folks just starting. I have a “Getting Started” section on my blog. And be sure to make it easy for folks to ask questions.

No matter how you choose to get involved, just be sure that you do. Mentoring other folks doesn’t have to take a lot of time, but it will certainly set you apart from the pack and solidify your expert status.
